Step One: Pick a theme for your landscaping project.

The first thing to decide when starting your landscape project, is picking a theme for your landscape. The hardest part of the project is sticking to the theme. At www.outdoor-room.ca you can see examples of themed landscapes that were built in Edmonton.  I have created four easy themes that can be purchased at Outdoor Room Landscape Supplies, these themes are listed below.

Contemporary Landscape Concept

Contemporary landscapes are usually created using straight lined hardscapes with columnar plant material. The old rule of using odd numbers for plant material does not apply here. The theme uses the concept, "less is more," and hardscape usually dominates the project. Plants that grow in Edmonton that are good for contemporary landscapes are Karl Foerster grass, Brandon Cedar, Japanese Yew, Magic Carpet Spirea, Calgary Carpet Juniper, Medora Juniper and Manchurian Ash Tree.
 Alpine Landscape Concept

Alpine Landscapes are created using texture, for example, mixing broad leaved and coniferous trees (Christmas trees). Rocks and boulders are what dominate the landscape. Water features always work well in Alpine Landscapes. The trick to creating an alpine landscape is the use of different sizes of rock, never stick to one size. Curves with, "the secret landscape radius" works very well for almost every yard. Plants that work well are Weeping Tellson, Blue Rug Juniper, Montgomery Spruce and Kinnikinnick.

 Native Landscape Concept

Native Landscape is based from materials found in local rock quarries and field stone found in the area. This landscape typically cost less, due to the trucking costs of other material. The use of native deciduous plants are common in the landscape. The curves that outline the landscape beds are created using, "the secrete dimension" to meet the size of the landscape. Good plants to use in a Native Landscape are Ivory Halo Dogwood, Mock Orange, Burning bush, Stella D' Ora, and Witcha Blue/Rug Juniper.

Rocky Mountain Landscape Concept

The Rocky Mountain Landscape is my favorite landscape. It is a combination of all the landscapes above. It was created with request of clients asking for a canmore-ish  look to their landscape. The rock has a natural brown earth tone that matches well with mulch in a Native Landscape theme. Rocky Mountain theme can also be used in a Contemporary theme due to the straight natural edges of the rock. The secret landscape radius and landscape dimension works extremely well with the theme. In fact you can say the "landscape radius secret" was created for it. The use of water features are easy to construct along with natural rock garden walls due to natural flat surfaces. Natural and man made hardscape features work well together with a Rocky Mountain Landscape due to the irregular selection of rock. Plants that work well are too many to list and vary in character. This Landscape Theme is truly a combination of 20 years of landscape design experience in Edmonton.
